Julio Montalvo is one of the leading trombonists from the island of Cuba. A songwriter, producer, arranger, and session musician, he also performs as a solo artist, leading his own project since 1998, in which he blends Afro-Cuban rhythms with elements of modern jazz to achieve an ingenious style: New Latin Jazz.
Julio has participated in various jazz festivals—both with his own projects and as a sideman—including the San Javier Jazz Festival, Jazz Plaza La Habana, Istanbul Jazz Festival, Jazz in Marciac (France), Granada Jazz Festival, Valencia Jazz Festival, Lugo Jazz Festival, Universijazz (Ciudad Real), and the Art Basel Miami Design District 2017 party with the Julio Montalvo Mambo Madness Orchestra, amongst others.
He has collaborated with leading pop and rock stars in Spain and won a Latin Grammy Award for co-producing the acoustic album David Bisbal: A Night at the Theatre Royal, where he also participated as a co-arranger and multi-instrumentalist.
He has shared the stage with prominent musicians from the international jazz circuit, such as Pat Metheny, the Perico Sambeat Sedajazz Big Band, Team Cuba, Alain Pérez, Ximo Tébar, Dominique Di Piazza, Darryl Hall, Claudio Roditi, Donald Edwards, Miguel “Angá” Díaz, Mark Nightingale, José Negroni, Mike Mossman, Gladstone Galliza, the Ramón Cardo Big Band, Edmundo Carneiro, and many more.
In July 2013, he created the Julio Montalvo Big Band, a 20-musician orchestra that delivers an intimate yet entertaining show, backed by performers of the highest standard.
